La Ceratonia was built around 1883 by French architect André Lecomte du Noüy. He was entrusted by King Carol I of Romania with the restoration of major Orthodox religious buildings.
Legend has it that he acquired this property to please his wife, who had fallen in love with the spectacular view of the bay. She, Hermine Augustine Eugénie Dudimat, was a French writer best known for her novel Amitié Amoureuse.
Over the years, several generations of artists and great intellectuals who lived in this remarkable estate undoubtedly contributed to the cultural influence of the French Riviera during La Belle Epoque.
